How to Leave an Unhealthy Relationship

You may look around at other relationships and realize that something is missing from yours. You may notice that other couples are kinder to each other than your significant other is to you, and they seem to respect each other more. You may even realize your relationship is detrimental for you. If you experience any of these situations, now is the time to follow these tips on how to leave an unhealthy relationship.

  1. Identify the problem. Before leaving an unhealthy relationship, you need to determine what exactly makes it an unhealthy relationship. Is it something that you can work on in counseling? Are you the one making the relationship unhealthy?
  2. Accept the advice of friends and family. Your family and friends know you the best, so if they are noticing warning signs in your relationship, take heed. They are only looking out for your best interest.
  3. Seek help. If you’re in an abusive relationship, seek help from authorities immediately. Support is available to help keep you safe.
  4. Have a plan. Think over your break-up in your mind, so you can stay strong when you’re facing the other person. Don’t let them talk you out of your plan. Stay strong and walk away. Take someone else with you if you need extra support.
  5. Begin living your life. Instead of spending time mourning your lost relationship, begin forming healthier ones. Do things that you have always wanted to do but have never had the opportunity. Enroll in a class, change careers, or give yourself a makeover. Take time to focus on yourself for awhile.
